The story

What lies behind the shapes.

The quatrefoil is one of the oldest ornamental shapes in decorative history, a four lobed form that shows up again and again in Gothic tracery, medieval stained glass, and the carved stonework of cathedral windows long before it ever found its way onto a tile. Its name comes from the Latin for “four leaves”.

I am not lying when I say that the inspiration to make this pattern came from an image of an old Giotto fresco in the Assisi S. Francesco Church. The fresco shows Esau feeding his father, and in the background you can see a strong pattern made with three shapes: a quatrefoil, an invert, and a small blue circular insert that slightly breaks up the strong red colour. I immediately fell in love and opened my 3D modelling tool to start designing the tile cutter. A few months later, and here we are...

All of my tiles are cut from hand-rolled slabs with tile cutters I designed myself.
